Brentford 3-0 Tottenham: rehearsed beat expensive
Brentford 3-0 Tottenham, Gtech Community Stadium, opening day. Keane Lewis-Potter on 12 minutes, Vitaly Janelt on 33, Michael Kayode on 49, and Igor Thiago hit the post with a penalty that would have made it four. I watched it, and I did not see a tactical masterclass. I saw one team that knew what it was doing in the moments that decide games, and one that did not yet.
Then I pulled the shot data, and it says the same thing with numbers.
The match in four numbers
xG (expected goals, how likely each shot is to go in, added up over the match): Brentford 4.04, Tottenham 0.76. Shots: 26 to 9. Brentford's expected points from that performance were 2.9 out of 3; Tottenham's were 0.06. This was not a smash-and-grab or a bad day in front of goal. It was the right result by a distance.
Where the game was won: the dead ball
Twelve of Brentford's 26 shots came from corners, free kicks or the penalty, worth 2.31 xG on their own. That is three times Tottenham's entire match. Nathan Collins had a 0.49 header from a corner inside three minutes. The third goal started with a corner, a Collins header down, a Sangaré shot saved and Kayode on the loose ball. Two of the three goals began with a dead ball. Tottenham had one set-piece shot all afternoon, worth 0.04.
That is not luck and it is not a formation. Mathias Jensen's deliveries, Collins attacking the same spot, bodies positioned for the second ball: that is repetition. Somebody trained it, many times, and it showed up on day one with a group that has played together for years.
What Tottenham did and did not do
They pressed. PPDA (passes per defensive action: how many passes you allow the opponent before you tackle, intercept or foul; lower means a harder press) was 7.9 for Spurs and 8.2 for Brentford, so the pressing was equal. The difference came after the ball was won. Deep completions (passes received close to the opponent's goal) were 13 for Brentford and 7 for Spurs. Tottenham won the ball and then had no shared picture of what to do with it.
Their chances tell the same story. Mikey Moore, 19, created the only three real ones (0.09, 0.25 and 0.28 xG, all saved). Sandro Tonali, the €108m signing, had two shots worth 0.03 between them. Gallagher, Tel, Solanke and Bentancur did not get a shot above 0.05. After the 61st minute nothing changed that produced a chance.
The squad-building part
Tottenham's summer, per Transfermarkt: seven arrivals for about €267m. Tonali €108m from Newcastle, Mateus Fernandes €99m from West Ham, Jan Paul van Hecke €60m from Brighton, plus Marcos Senesi, Andrew Robertson and Martin Dúbravka on free transfers. Out went Romero, Vuskovic, Spence and others for about €166m. Four of the new signings started at Brentford, three of them in the defence and midfield that conceded 4.04 xG. Archie Gray, 20, captained.
Brentford's summer: six arrivals for about €84m. Mamadou Sangaré €48m from Lens (he made the first goal), Jannik Schuster €18m, Jaidon Anthony €17.5m, Callum Wilson free. They sold almost nobody. The core that played together last season played together again.
So: a €794m squad against a €562m one, and the cheaper one won 3-0 with 4.04 xG. I would not read too much into one match, and Spurs will be better in October. But it is the same lesson as Hull against United the same afternoon, from the other side. Eleven players who have rehearsed together beat twenty-five talented players who have just met. The money buys the talent. It does not buy the repetition or the unity, and you cannot sign those in August.
What I would take from it
- Set pieces are the cheapest goals in football. Brentford got 2.31 xG from dead balls with a squad worth €230m less. That is a coaching and analysis investment, not a transfer one.
- A rebuild has a cost that is not on the invoice. Seven new players means weeks, maybe months, of moments like Saturday. If you buy seven, plan for that and protect the manager through it.
- Pressing is not a plan. Both teams pressed equally. The plan is what happens in the five seconds after you win it, and that is the part that takes a season to build.
